All about the new LION Program

A new Scouting program for kindergarten-age boys is available as a national pilot this fall within our community. Saratoga’s Pack 566 is welcoming kindergarten boys to supplement home and school education with personal growth by joining the Lion program. The program will fuel their imagination, creativity and fun as they experience the growth Scouting can provide. At the end of the Lion year, they graduate to Tiger and advance through Cub Scouting.

Who can be a Pack 566 Lion?

Lions are boys in Kindergarten. They must be age 5 by September 30th. Older siblings can join other 566 units: Troop 566 for boys 11 to 18, Crew 566 for boys & girls 14 to 21. Lions are part of Cub Scout Pack 566 sharing in some of the meetings and activities with boys in grades 1 - 5. The kindergarten-age boy and his adult partner join and attend meetings and activities together.

How much time does it take?

The Lion program has 9 meetings, one per month from September to May, each lasting 45 minutes. The meeting takes place with 6-8 boys along side their adult partner and an experienced scout leader called a Lion Guide. Initially the Lion Guide will run the meetings, followed by the adult partners taking turns. In addition to the 9 meetings, each month will have a field trip that the Lions attend together with each other and their families. Lastly, Lions are invited to go to 2 or 3 special Pack Meetings with the 1st through 5th graders (the Pack Meeting might be the field trip for that month), and are also invited to attend the Fall Pack 566 Camping Trip with their families. This can be done as a day trip or as an overnight experience. Our Pack can answer all camping questions and can even assist with certain supplies.

How much does it cost?

Just $99 dollars through the end of Kindergarten.
Any other expenses such as field trips admission (if any) or camping will vary depending on actual costs.

Joining starts with the paperwork

Since Lion is a pilot program we are still using the standard Cub Scout Application. This single application serves both the youth and adult partner. Please write "LION" at the top of the form and fill in "K" for the grade. Feel free to ask Leadership for help as the application can be intimidating the first time.
